Puisi

Aku orang tuamu, engkau anakku
Aku tempat tenang untukmu, engkau tempat gembira untukku
Aku memberimu wajah yang tenang, kau memberiku tawamu
Aku menunggu, engkau bergoyang
Aku makan malammu, engkau kue cokelatku
Aku waktu tidurmu, enkau saat terjagaku
Aku lagu nina-bobomu, engkau Ciluba ku
Aku ciuman selamat tidurmu, engkau cintaku

Untuk Puteraku Yang Kini Telah Dewasa

oleh Alice E. Chase

Tanganku sibuk sepanjang hari,
Tak banyak waktuku untuk bermain.
Permainan kecil yang kauminta,
Tak banyak waktuku untukmu.

Aku mencuci bajumu, menjahit, memasak,
Namun ketika kau bawa buku  gambarmu,
Dan  kau memintaku, ayolah bersenang-senang bersamamu,
Kukatakan kepadamu “Nanti, nak.”

Menyelimutimu agar aman sepanjang malam.
Mendengarkan doamu, memadamkan lampu.
Berjingkat-jingkat berjalan ke pintu,
Andai ku tinggal l ebih lama bersamamu

Karena hidup ini singkat, dan tahun-tahun bagai berlari
Alangkah cepat anak laki-laki kecil tumbuh dewasa
Tak ada lagi ia di sisimu,
Untuk berbagi rahasia berharganya denganmu

Buku gambar telah disimpan,
Tak ada lagi mainan anak-anak,
Tak ada ciuman selamat malam, tak ada doamu kudengar
Semua itu milik masa lalu.

Tanganku yang dulu sibuk, sekarang membeku,
Hari-hari panjang dan tak terisi,
Andai ku dapat kembali dan melakukan
Hal-hal kecil yang kau minta

Your children are not your children

Your children are not your children.
They are sons and daughters of Life's longing for itself.
They come through you but not from you.
And though they are with you yet they belong not to you.
You may give them your love but not your thoughts,
For they have their own thoughts.
You may house their bodies but not their souls,
For thir souls dwell in the house of tomorrow,
which you cannot visit, not even in your dreams.
You may strive to be like them, but seek not to make them like you.
For life goes not backward nor tarries with yesterday.
You are the bows from which your children as living arrows are sent forth.
The archer sees the make upon the path of the infinite,
and He bends you with His might that His arrows may go swift and far.
Let your bending in the archer's hand be for gladness.
For even as He loves the arrow that flies,
so He also loves the bow that is stable.

Children Learn What They Live

If children live with criticism,
They learn to condemn.
If children live with hostility,
They learn to fight.
If children live with ridicule,
They learn to be shy.
If children live with shame,
They learn to feel guilty.
If children live with encouragement,
They learn confidence.
If children live with tolerance,
They learn to be patient.
If children live with praise,
They learn to appreciate.
If children live with acceptance,
They learn to love.
If children live with approval,
They learn to like themselves.
If children live with honesty,
They learn truthfulness.
If children live with security,
They learn to have faith in themselves and others.
If children live with friendliness,
They learn the world is a nice place in which to live.

Things Mothers Learn

I gave you life, but cannot live it for you.
I can give you directions, but I cannot be there to lead you.
I can allow you freedom, but I cannot account for it.
I can teach you right from wrong, but I cannot decide for you.
I can offer you advice, but I cannot accept it for you.
I can give you love, but I cannot force it upon you.
I can teach you to share, but I cannot make you unselfish.
I can teach you respect, but I cannot force you to show honor.
I can advise you about friends, but cannot choose them for you.
I can advise you about sex, but I cannot keep you pure.
I can tell you about drink, but I can't say "no" for you.
I can warn you about drugs, but I can't prevent you from using them.
I can tell you about lofty goals, but I can't achieve them for you.
I can teach you about kindness, but I can't force you to be gracious.
I can pray for you, but I cannot make you walk with God.
I can tell you how to live, but I cannot give you eternal life.

I Love You Enough

I Loved You Enough....
to ask where you were going,
with whom, and what time you would be home.

I Loved You Enough....
to insist that you save
your money and buy a bike for yourself
even though we could afford to buy one for you.

I Loved You Enough....
to be silent and let
you discover that your
new best friend was a creep.

I Loved You Enough....
to make you take a Milky Way
back to the drugstore (with a bite out of it)
and tell the clerk,
"I stole this yesterday and want to pay for it."

I Loved You Enough....
to stand over you for two hours
while you cleaned your room,
a job that would have taken 15 minutes.

I Loved You Enough....
to let you see anger, disappointment
and tears in my eyes.
Children must learn that their
parents aren't perfect.

I Loved You Enough....
to let you assume the
responsibility for your actions
even when the penalties
were so harsh they almost
broke my heart.

But most of all,
I Loved You Enough....
to say NO
when I knew you
would hate me for it.
Those were the most
difficult battles of all.
I'm glad I won them,
because in the end,
you won, too.

When You Thought I Wasn't Looking

- Author Unknown

When you thought I wasn't looking,
I saw you hang up my first painting on the refrigerator,
and I wanted to paint another one.

When you thought I wasn't looking,
I saw you feed a stray cat,
and I thought it was good to be kind to animals.

When you thought I wasn't looking,
I saw you make my favorite cake for me,
and I knew that little things are special things.

When you thought I wasn't looking,
I heard you say a prayer,
and I believed there is a God I could always talk to.

When you thought I wasn't looking,
I felt you kiss me goodnight,
and I felt loved.

When you thought I wasn't looking,
I saw that you cared,
and I wanted to be everything that I could be.

When you thought I wasn't looking,
I LOOKED... and wanted to say thanks for all the things I saw
when you thought I wasn't looking.

A Child's Ten Commandments for Parents

  1. My hands are small; please don't expect perfection whenever I make my bed, draw a picture or throw a ball. My legs are short; please slow down so that I can keep up with you.
  2. My eyes have not seen the world as yours have; please let me explore safely; don't restrict me unnecessarily.
  3. Housework will always be there. I'm only little for such a short time-please take the time to explain things to me about this wonderful world and do so willingly.
  4. My feelings are tender; please be sensitive to my needs; don't nag me all day long. (You wouldn't want to be nagged for your inquisitiveness). Treat me as you would like to be treated.
  5. I am a special gift; please treasure me as my Creator intended you to do, holding me accountable for my actions, giving me guidelines to live by and disciplining me in a loving manner.
  6. I need your encouragement, not just your praise to grow. Please go easy on the criticism; you can criticize the things I do without criticizing me.
  7. Please give me the freedom to make decisions concerning myself. Permit me to fail, so that I can learn from my own mistakes. Then someday I will be prepared to make the kind of decisions life will require of me.
  8. Please don't do things over for me. Somehow that makes me feel that my efforts didn't quite measure to your expectations. I know it's hard, but please don't try to compare me to my brother or sister.
  9. Please don't be afraid to leave for a weekend together. Kids need a vacation from parents, just as parents need vacations from kids. Besides it's a great way to show us kids that your marriage is very special.
  10. Please set a good example for me to follow in all the ways of life. I enjoy watching the things you do and want to do them just like you do.

A Father Means...

A Father means so many things...

A friend for life.

A understanding heart.

A source of strength and of support

Right from the very start.

A constant readiness to help

In a kind and thoughtful way.

With encouragement and forgiveness.

No matter what comes your way.

A special generosity and always affection too.

A Father means so many things.

That’s why we admire them and love them.

If I had my child to raise over again

If I had my child to raise over again
I'd build self-esteem first and the house later
I'd finger paint more and point the finger less
I would do less correcting and more connecting
I'd take my eyes off my watch and watch with my eyes
I would care to know less and know to care more
I'd take more hikes and fly more kites
I'd stop playing serious and seriously play
I would run through more fields and gaze at more stars
I'd do more hugging and less tugging
I'd see the oak tree in the acorn more often
I would be firm less often and affirm much more
I'd model less about the love of power
And more about the power of love.
